The word Christianity gets its roots from one powerful name; Christ. For some, He might be the long-hair guy whose statues and images are everywhere. But for us who have faith in him, believe that he is the Savior of the world, is our key to Heaven and eternal life. For all Christians, Jesus Christ is the salvation that God gave to humanity.

Additionally, Jesus’ life has been one of the most amazing and controversial stories in history; from his birth to his death, and to his ascension. Before we call ourselves Christians, it is important that we answer the question “who is Jesus Christ?”. We cannot just place our faith in something or someone just because other people do so. Hence, before believing and placing our faiths fully in him, we need to know about him as much as we can. As the Bible says, Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the Father except through him.

Who is Jesus Christ and Why is He Important?

We are all sinners; from the beginning of the history of humanity, when Adam and Eve sinned against God, until today. The more humans commit sin, the more we drift away from God. Noah’s story reveals the consequence of sins; death. And as sinners, suffering for all eternity is what awaits us. However, God doesn’t want us to suffer. And because of His love for us, He gave His one and only begotten son to redeem us.  That son is none other than Jesus. He came to earth to preach the words of God and lost His life on the cross so we can have everlasting life.

Jesus’ existence is important because it signifies hope, a new life and opportunity given by God, and the unending love of God to humanity. He came to this world to lead people away from hell. His teachings on how we should live according to God’s will is the basis of Christianity today.

Who is Jesus Christ According to the Bible?

In the Bible, Jesus held many titles. He is called, the Lamb of God (John 1:29), King of kings (1 Timothy 6:15), God’s begotten Son (John 3:16), Lord of lords(Psalm 136:3), the Lion of Judah(Revelation 5:5), and the Son of man (Matthew 18:11). But having those titles does not answer our question of “who is Jesus Christ” according to the Bible In Matthew 3:17, Jesus was introduced by The Father Himself as His Son. Hence, the title “Son of God”. But he’s also called the “Son of Man” because he was born through the virgin Mary (Matthew 8:11). Being born from a virgin is important, for it shows that Jesus was pure and had no sinful nature.

Apostle Paul receives his apostleship, not from any man, but from Jesus; implying that Christ is not a man (Galatians 1:1). He is the Son of God manifested in the flesh to give salvation to humanity (Timothy 3:16 ). His blood will be the sacrifice for the world to be saved. Jesus’ resurrection was both the fulfillment of the prophecy and the proof of God’s power.

One of the misconceptions about Christ and His presence in the Bible is his appearance only in the New Testament. However, decades before Jesus was born, prophets had already predicted his coming. Isaiah 7:14 states that a sign would be given by God, that is when a virgin conceived, and it will be fulfilled. Additionally, during the time of Abraham, the prophecy of Jesus’ coming was already declared (Genesis 22:18).

What is the Story of Jesus?

Long before He was born, prophets have declared Jesus’ coming. Everything about his life was miraculous; from the day he was conceived, to his death and ascension.  He came down to earth through the womb of a virgin and was conceived through the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, who was betrothed to Mary, came to know about her pregnancy and wanted to leave the relationship, for at that time, having a child before marriage was looked down upon.

However, an angel appeared in Joseph’s dreams and told him the real deal; Mary was pregnant with a child who would do great wonders. Listening to the angel’s explanation, Joseph took Mary as his wife. Upon reaching Bethlehem, there was no room in the inn, so Mary and Joseph settled in a stable where Jesus was born. Soon after, wise men searched for Jesus to give him gifts of wealth, celebrating his birth. Rumors of a newborn future king of the Jews reached King Herod who then felt threatened. So, he attempted to search for the child to kill him. So an angel appeared yet again to Joseph’s dream telling him to flee with Mary and the baby to avoid Herod’s wrath. And so they stayed in Egypt until Herod died.

When Joseph was advised by the angel to return to Israel, he went and settled in the city of Nazareth. So Jesus grew up and started His ministry. The news of His miracles and teachings spread, garnering envy from the Pharisees and high priests of the land. Hence, He was crucified; not because He was condemned but to fulfill the prophecy and to pay for our sins.

What is His Mission to the World?

Jesus was sent to lead us into the light (John 12:46). Us, who were once covered by the darkness caused by sin, will find the light and the way through Him. By following His teachings, the kingdom of God will be revealed to us. He came to the world to comfort those who mourn and to save the sinners. For sins are caused by the devil, Jesus came to destroy it, as said in 1 John 3:8.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

According to 5:32, Jesus did not come to the world for the righteous people, He came so that He the sinners will repent of their sins. On the prior verse, He used the analogy of the healthy not needing a doctor, but the sick who needs healing. Like what is said in these verses, Jesus’ mission is to save and heal the world from the afflictions of sins. And those that will follow Him and His teachings will receive what His Father promised to the righteous.

What is Jesus known for?

Today, there are more than 2 billion people in the world that believes in Jesus. And even though some do not believe in Christianity, we can say that more than 80% of the world’s population know His name. Because He is the main figure of Christianity, His whole life has been highlighted since then. When He was doing His ministries, He performed several miracles; proving that He is the Son of The Creator of heaven and earth. However, during the time when He was preaching, the people marveled at His wisdom but doubted Him as they know Him as the carpenter’s son; implying that they are poor and there’s no way that He got any sort of conventional schooling that gives Him that kind of wisdom.

In His time, Jesus was perceived differently by groups of people. For the Pharisees and those who agree to with, He was a blasphemous fellow who claimed to be the Messiah while blatantly disobeying Jewish law and traditions. While for those who witnessed His acts and words, He was known as none other than the Son of God.

How Many Miracles Did Jesus Do?

Although His birth was a miracle itself, Jesus Himself performed miracles while He was on His ministry. If we were to count all the miracles listed on the 4 books in the Bible accounting His life, Jesus performed 34 miracles throughout His ministry.

Jesus Fed Thousands

• It is said that we should not worry about what to eat for God provides for us. Jesus proved again that He is the Son of Our Great Provider by feeding at least 5000 people with just 5 loaves of bread and 2 pieces of fish. (Matthew 14:15-21)
• When Jesus preached for 3 days, He declared that He does not want to send them hungry as they may collapse on the way to their homes. Just like how He did with the 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes, He fed at least 4000 people. (Matthew 15:32-39).

Evil spirits were Cast Out by Jesus

• Jesus passed by a possessed man, He cast out the impure spirit out of him. (Mark 1:23-28)
• He cast out the demons who possessed 2 men at Gadaranes. The demons immediately recognized Him and begged Him to send them into the herd of pigs. (Matthew 8:28-34)
• A man who couldn’t talk because of demonic possession was healed by Jesus (Matthew 9:32-33)

The Sick Were Healed

• In the 2nd miracle, Jesus healed the son of an official who asked for Him to do so. (John 4:46-47) Unlike the first miracle, He did not have any physical contact with the ill child, Jesus just told the official that his son will live and he believed it and so it was. This act demonstrates the power of Jesus’ words and the power of one’s faith in the word of God.
• The same with the official’s son, Jesus healed a centurion’s servant. Jesus was amazed by his faith and his belief that without Him coming into his roof, his servant will be healed by Jesus’s words alone and so it was.
• Simon’s mother-in-law was sick and Jesus healed her (Mark 1:30-31)
• The faith of a Canaanite woman, witnessed by Jesus, healed her daughter. (Matthew 15:22-28)
• A woman who was bleeding for 12 years, sneaked behind Jesus and touched the edge of His cloak. She believed that just by touching Him, she will be healed. Jesus turned to her and said that her faith healed her. (Luke 8:43-48)
• Although it was against the tradition to cure the sick on Sabbath day, Jesus healed a man suffering from a withered hand. (Matthew 12:10-13)
• When Jesus was about to be arrested, Simon Peter struck one of the guards whose ear was cut off. Jesus healed the guard. (Luke 22:50-51)

Lepers

• In ancient times, people with leprosy were shunned away by society and labeled unclean. Jesus told a leper to be clean and he was healed. (Mark 1:40-45)
• 10 lepers were healed by the power of God through Jesus. (Luke 17:11-19)

Crippled and Paraplegics

• Jesus saw a man, who has been paralyzed for 38 years, at the pool called Bethesda. He told him to get up and walk. (John 5:1-9)
• A paralyzed man was brought to Jesus. He told him that his sins were forgiven and commanded him to get up, bring his mat, and go home. (Matthew 9:1-8)
• A man born blind(being born with a disability was because ) who had been on the side of the road begging for alms was healed. (John 9:1-38)
• A man who was suffering from abnormal swelling of his body was healed in front of the Pharisees. (Luke 14:1-4)
• After 18 years of being crippled, a woman was healed by Jesus. (Luke 13:10-17)

The Blind, The Deaf, and The Mute

• 2 blind men were healed according to their faith (Matthew 9:27-31)
• A man who was oppressed by a demon was healed and was able to overcome blindness and inability to talk (Matthew 12:22)
• Jesus made a blind man in Bethsaida see the world again. (Mark 8:22-26)
• 2 blind men were granted by Jesus their sense of sight and they started to follow Him. (Matthew 20:30-34)
• Yet again, Jesus made a deaf and mute man hear and speak again. And like what He told the others, He asked Him not to tell anyone.  (Mark 7:31-37)

Jesus Brought the Dead Back to Life

• The funeral of a widow’s son was filled with awe when Jesus told the dead to get up. (Luke 7:11-18)
• The crowd laughed when Jesus said that the dead young girl was just asleep but He took the girl’s hand and she got up. (Matthew9:18-26 )
• Lazarus, who was dead for 4 days, rose from the grave. (John 11:1-46)
• Jesus Himself resurrected from the grave.
